Practical Information

Electricity

Electricity supply in Bangkok operates at 220V/50Hz. There are 3 types of power sockets in use in Thailand as shown in the pictures below. You need an adaptor if your plugs are of a different type.

Water

It is not advisable to drink water straight off the tap. Bottled drinking water is a better option. They are easily available and inexpensive. Alternatively, boil the water first before drinking.

Smoking

Smoking is prohibited in many parts of Bangkok. This ban encompasses all indoor public spaces such as restaurants, bars, pubs, nightclubs, shopping malls, public transportation, government buildings, schools, hospitals, both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned. Additionally, smoking is also prohibited in most outdoor public spaces such as parks, zoos, amusement parks, children’s playgrounds, markets, sports facilities, and public sidewalks (within 3 meters of buildings). You are allowed to smoke, however, at designated smoking areas, which are typically marked and located outdoors, away from crowds and entrances.

Offenders can be fined from 2000 to 5000 baht. However, enforcement is lax and prosecution of smokers is rare. In addition, tobacco products cannot be displayed publicly in shops. To purchase tobacco products, you must ask the shop assistants.

Tipping

Tipping is not customary in Bangkok. However a tip is always appreciated as most service staffs in Thailand are poorly paid. If you do tip, make sure you tip directly to the person who served you and always in cash; otherwise the money may not reach the intended person.
